While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Viral Photo Captures Beach Patrol Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, describes the famous coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many others in the area, detected loud noises ringing out around the suburb.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up from behind. It was a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that big kit and barefoot … He moved at something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and ambulance crews caring for numerous victims.

Collective Response and Assistance

Doolan’s account was a single example among several to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the violence serving as a temporary medical station. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the ocean to rescue people who were struggling.

In the days after the attack, messages of gratitude flooded in. One post conveyed appreciation for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over hatred”.

The group of rescuers later shared a communication, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are touched by the kindness for our personnel,” the team commented. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it aids those affected.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional beach safety officers, said that the team performed exceptionally from the second the incident commenced through to late that evening.

“There have been so many emotional accounts, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“The team show dedication every day in ensuring our internationally renowned beaches protected for visitors, but what we observed on that day should be celebrated.

“As we grieve and process the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the face of such evil.”
