In a significant escalation, Kyiv's forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil processing facility. The attack occurred on Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military authorities.

Details of the Strike and Strategic Impact

The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the site. This represents not the first instance where Ukrainian forces has deployed these powerful British-supplied missiles against objectives on Russian territory.

Military spokespersons noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the main suppliers of fuel products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.

Political Discussions on the War Front

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held “very good” talks with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on potential pathways to end the war.

“It was a really good conversation: many details, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “We explored some new ideas on how to bring real peace closer, and it involves formats, meetings, and, certainly, the timeline.”

Judicial Proceedings Within Russia

In a parallel internal matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.

This case are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of activists accused of forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the charges as politically motivated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in defiance.

International Detainee Situation

The Kremlin indicated it is in contact with French officials concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of espionage.

An official stated that Russia has made an offer to France regarding Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all state resources mobilised to offer assistance and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.

Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol

The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is set to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.

However, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and confiscation of assets from local residents.

It is due to reopen by the month's end with a performance of a classic Russian story, following its reconstruction largely anew over the last 24 months.
