Three-time NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" knee injury when the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 at the Heat.

Jokic injured himself late in the first half in an inadvertent contact with fellow Nugget Jones.

Jones came down on the foot of the MVP, who promptly collapsed to the ground grabbing his knee.

The star, that tops the league this season in rebounds and assists, posted 21 points and eight assists in the contest prior to sustaining the setback.

The player is scheduled for an MRI scan on the following day to assess the seriousness of the injury.

"Instantly, he realized something was wrong," commented Denver head coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever that is injured, it's difficult, particularly a player as special as Jokic. We will know more on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust as a team. Obviously, at this moment, I'm focused about Jokic as a person and the letdown of experiencing something like that."
