NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his victory in November.

"The choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of directing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The compound, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
