Prison Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars
He fought the law and the legal system prevailed.
Sixty days following being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now looks headed to prison.
Expected Jailing
The convicted coup-monger – who's been under home confinement in his mansion while a number of court processes and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, during growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious high-security prison.
Previous Statements on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the far-right ex- paratrooper exhibited minimal compassion for the country's jailed individuals.
“Why should we provide these scoundrels a easy time?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to wind up behind bars, you simply need is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Jail Destination Debate
But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, four of whom this week toured the facility in an seeming attempt to discourage the judiciary from banishing him there.
The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he predicted the elderly figure to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and feared his destination could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal issues – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential election race – implied it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He won’t be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing four dozen detainees: “That’s almost one square metre per detainee.
“We conversed to the convicts and they grumble, of course, of the awful food,” remarked the senator.
Allies Voice Concerns
He is not the only voice speaking out before the former president’s predicted imprisonment.
Authoring in a prominent newspaper, one more backer, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the biggest wrong in its record”.
“This is an injustice that eats away the hearts of countless of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Varied General Opinion
It is possibly true given the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. But his expected jailing has also warmed the hearts of millions individuals who think he deserves to be jailed for plotting to stop his successor from becoming president – and even plotting to have him assassinated.
Reimont Otoni, a politician for the incumbent leader's allied group, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to obtain respectful handling – but respectful care behind bars. He must not carry on being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long praising the severe handling of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has repeatedly claimed that basic rights should not be for criminals – opted to inspect a prison to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he said.
“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “humiliating, demeaning conduct”.
Possible Jail Facilities
Despite talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently houses about thousands of detainees, his expected destination looks to be a close jail for police officers and other “particular” prisoners called Papudinha (Small Papuda).
Its cells are considerably more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the spectacular presidential palace, about 20 kilometers away.
According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – about the area of two parking spaces – and contains a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a TV and even a cooler in his room as long as they were supplied by his family,” information stated.
Partisan Responses
Senator Lucas condemned the talked-about plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s legal case and will decide his future in the {
