Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
