In Such Poor Health Walking Was Impossible Until a Fellow Passenger Practically Supported Me to the Toilets.
At the age of my late teens, my morning travel was on an express bus. It was perpetually full and was consistently standing room only once I stepped aboard.
During a certain commute, I was feeling quite nauseous when the coach lurched around every turn. I kept telling myself to persevere just a little longer before the bus arrived at my stop, so I could then make a mad dash to the closest public restroom to be sick.
We were coming down the road leading to my stop and I understood I wasnāt going to hold on. All of a sudden, it felt as if a veil came over me. Everything just went white and really quiet; as if someone cut the sound. My mind raced, āIām going to faintā.
Fortunately, I stood toward the front inside the vehicle, so I took a couple of steps toward the driver and requested that the driver to stop, explaining to him that I was about to get ill. The driver opened the bus doors and I stumbled out on to the pavement.
I was determined not to vomit in view of a busy multi-lane road, so I forced myself up and endeavored to make my way to the park on the other side, where I believed Iād at least be able to discreetly hide near some foliage to throw up. However I apparently fainted. I could feel my physical self, yet walking was impossible or see clearly, so I started crawling towards the grassy area.
āAre you okay, dear?ā
Right then, I got scooped up. I felt an arm around my waist and heard a man say, āEverything alright, love?ā I managed to tell the unknown man that I had to to be sick. Therefore, he almost helped me walk into a nearby building and put me into the female bathroom. He inquired whether I required him to stay with me but I declined.
A few minutes later, I felt better enough to sit down when from beyond the door came him inquire, āAre you feeling better, dear? Is there anything you require?ā I could not to stand up at that moment but I did succeed to thank him and following a brief period regained the function of my feet. I made my way home and spent the following days healing from what was later diagnosed as a severe stomach virus.
I never glimpsed his features ā merely his legs along with a sizable container for tools he held ā yet he rescued me, during a time when I was at my most vulnerable.
Frequently, society can make you guarded, hostile, and combative. His was the sort of gesture that undoes that emotional callousness. He was proof that peopleās natural inclination is to be kind, a quality I adore in other people.
