Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In recent years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.
