Battlefield 6's Relaxed Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times

Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the standard Breakthrough setup but includes several notable changes:

  • Each team includes only 8 human participants, with the remaining filled by 32 bots.
  • Actions performed by human gamers award complete experience points, while bot actions provide reduced XP.
  • Only two locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
  • Features like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking have been turned off.

In short, this mode lives up to its name: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, since it gives more options for gamers looking for alternative ways to have fun with the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many Battlefield 6 players are mad.

Community Reactions: Anger to Praise

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," reads a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "It's unclear where we are headed with this game," while another lists all the issues they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We don't need this bot mode."

On the other hand, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's very fun to practice, real players prevent it from being a complete grind but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who actually go outside and don't play this title 24/7. Allow them to find a middle ground," states a different comment. A response via social media explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," and someone else praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Constructive Criticisms and Player Input

Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize the new mode. Some users have pointed out that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of options in the game already. On a similar note, some areas often face mostly bots in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of real players, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.

Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to remove bot farms from the system. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. Another labels this mode as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced great enjoyment in the first couple of days, what prompted them to change it?"

Looking Ahead: Will Changes Occur?

Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and acting on player input. Tasks being too difficult got fixed very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this new playlist is underperforming to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
