Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
