Adult Swim's Leading New Show of 2025 Secures a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
